Waste Water Treatment Using Eco Friendly Oxidising Agent Fe (VI)

Vidyavati Shastry and Shashidhar S

Ferrate (Fe (VI)) is a potential water treatment chemical due to its dual functions as an oxidant and a subsequent coagulant/precipitant as ferric hydroxide. Hence, an application of Fe (VI) to wastewater could achieve both oxidative elimination of various micro pollutants and reduction in the COD, BOD, Total hardness, Chloride, Fluoride can be achieved. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of Fe (VI) to oxidize selected micro pollutants and remove phosphate during enhanced treatment of municipal waste water in a single treatment step. The waste water from pond in K.R Puram, Bangalore is treated with powerful eco-friendly oxidizing agent Fe(VI){0.005mg/L}, the parameters such as, COD, BOD,TSS, Total hardness, chloride, phosphate, ammonia, cyanide etc. are measured before and after treatment. The reduction in the COD, BOD, Total hardness, Phosphate, Ammonia, Cyanides are observed.

Bioremediation of Tannery Effluents by Filamentous Cyanobacteria Anabaena Flos-Aquae West

Kannan V, Vijayasanthi M and Rajmohan N

Heavy metal pollution of ground and surface waters by industrial effluents has become a serious threat to the environment especially in developing countries. Though many conventional physicochemical methods are currently being practiced, biotechnological methods are becoming attractive alternatives, as they are economical and eco-friendly. In this study, the search for innovative and eco-friendly biotechnologies to remove toxicants from effluents has focused attention on the detoxification capacity of a variety of microbe\'s especially cyanobacteria. The treated effluents from tannery industry were collected and added to the cyanobacterial growth medium in various proportions. The photosynthetic pigments and nitrogen status of Anabaena flos-aquae were analysed before and after the treatment with effluent. The present investigations showed that Anabaena flos-aquae can serve as the potential bioremedial organism for industrial pollution.

Trace Analysis of Taste-Odor Compounds in Water by "Salt-Free" Purge-and-Trap Sampling with GC-MS Detection

Thavrin Manickum, Wilson John and Mncedisi Philip Malungana

A novel, fully validated, purge-and-trap sampling method, with gas chromatography-mass spectrometric detection for simultaneous quantitation of geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) was developed. The procedure involved purging a 25 mL sample volume, containing 1% (v/v) methanol, at 60°C for 20 min. Quantitation was done by separation on an HP 5-MS capillary column (30 m x 0.25 mm x 0.25 µm), followed by mass spectrometric detection in the selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode and a multiplier voltage of 400 mV above the auto tune setting. The method was reproducible (RSD <15%) and linear (r2 = 0.995) over the calibration range (5-100 ng/L). The relative recoveries of analytes from potable and raw water were between 80 and 120%; limits of quantitation (LOQ) achieved were 4 ng/L and 7 ng/L, for GSM and 2-MIB, respectively.
