Monolithic Integration of Organic Electronic Devices

Wan-Ju Li

A novel organic optical sensor that integrates a front organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and an organic photodiode (OPD) is demonstrated. The stripe-shaped cathode is used in the OLED components to create light signals, while the space between the stripe-shaped cathodes serves as the detection window for integrated OPD units. A MoO3 (5 nm)/Ag (15 nm) bi-layer inter-electrode is interposed between the vertically stacked OLED and OPD units, serving simultaneously as the cathode for the front OLED and an anode for the upper OPD units in the sensor. In the integrated sensor, the emission of the OLED units is confined by the area of the opaque stripe-shaped cathodes, optimized to maximize the reflected light passing through the window space for detection by the OPD components.

Nano-sphere lithography fabrication of large-area ordered arrays plasmonic nanostructures for high-sensitivity biosensors

Roberto Rella

In this work, highly ordered array of plasmonic nanostructures have been fabricated developing a simple and reproducible approach based on nano-sphere lithography (NSL). This cost-effective method is based on the self-assembling of close-packed polystyrene (PS) particles at air/water interface, and enables the fabrication of colloidal mask characterized by a high quality crystal structure. Periodic array of metal nanostructures can be easily prepared on large-area by exploiting the interstitial geometry of this cheap lithographic mask. In particular, highly ordered array of gold nano-triangles distributed in hexagonal lattice have been fabricated on different kind of substrates. In this work, an optical biosensor based on localized surface plasmon resonance has been developed for the sensitive detection of lipopolysaccharides (LPS).

Photodetectors in Analytical Applications

Jixun Zhan

photodetectors include any device for registering photons with frequencies above that of radio waves—from far infrared on up to gamma rays. In this article we survey the main types of applications that use photodetectors. Broadly speaking, these applications fall into two general groupings—communications and remote sensing. In communications, the radiation is simply the carrier for an encoded signal, while in the various forms of remote sensing, the radiation is the signal, conveying information about an object or scene

Smart Actuators for Innovative Biomedical Applications

Mustafa Khamis

MEMS incorporate microscale contraptions that mix mechanical and electrical segments. The basic parts of MEMS are the microsensors and the microactuators, the brand name lengths of which range from 1 to 100μm. Microactuators are electromechanical devices that have a control instrument and are overall worked electrically, capably, or pneumatically. It is a direct framework to change energy into development.

Silicon Carbide Biotechnology for Robust Implantable Neural Interfaces

Stephen E Saddow

Intracortical neural interfaces (INI) have made impressive progress in recent years but still display questionable long-term reliability. Here, we report on the development and characterization of highly resilient monolithic silicon carbide (SiC) neural devices. SiC is a physically robust, biocompatible, and chemically inert semiconductor. The device support was micromachined from p-type SiC with conductors created from n-type SiC, simultaneously providing electrical isolation through the resulting p–n junction. Electrodes possessed geometric surface area (GSA) varying from 496 to 500 K μm.
